CMHA-WECB commemorates Mental Illness Awareness Week
Mar 6, 2020
The first week of October brings with it the reminder that millions of Canadians live with mental illnesses every day. October 1-7 is Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW), and CMHA-WECB will commemorate the week by hosting a series of events.
Oct. 2 @ 9:30am – Walk a Mile Kick-off – Join Rose Wood and walk your own marathon in support of Rose, CMHA and the Detroit Marathon! Atlas Tube Centre, Outdoor Walking Path
Oct. 4 @ 5:00pm – safeTALK – A half-day alertness training that prepares anyone over the age of 15, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. CMHA-WECB, 1400 Windsor Ave.
Oct. 5 & 6 – ASIST – ASIST is the world’s leading suicide intervention workshop. During the two-day interactive session, participants learn to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of suicide. Fogolar Furlan, 1800 N. Service Rd., Windsor
Oct. 7 @ 11:00am – Pound! – POUND is a full body cardio jam session inspired by drumming. This workout is a combination of cardio, conditioning and strength training with Yoga and Pilates inspired movements using lightly weighted exercise drumsticks, called RIPSTIX. Charles Clark Square, 215 Chatham St. E., Windsor
MIAW is an annual national public education campaign coordinated by the Canadian Alliance on Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH). CAMIMH’s mandate is to ensure that mental illness and mental health are placed on the national agenda so that Canadians receive appropriate access to care and support. CMHA is an active member of CAMIMH and is proud to support its annual Faces of Mental Illness campaign during MIAW.
This year’s MIAW encourages Canadians to join the conversation about mental illness online using the hashtag #miaw17. As mental illness affects more than six million people across the country, the campaign encourages Canadians to share personal stories and engage in a discussion regarding the need for increased access to mental health services for all Canadians.
CMHA-WECB offers a range of services to help people living in Windsor-Essex County. We have a variety of programs and services for the most seriously mentally ill along with those dealing with moderate mental illness and addictions.
