Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training provides the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to support a person who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being, a mental health or substance use crisis until professional help is available.

The practical skills of MHFA help you develop the confidence and peace of mind knowing you can support those around you, and your ability to self-care and prioritize your well-being while supporting others.

CMHA-WECB is pleased to offer two versions of MHFA.

MHFA Essentials is a suite of courses, focused on core knowledge and practical skills. The courses do not lead to Certification. Designed to be accessible and applicable across many settings, Essentials offers a strong foundation in MHFA principles without formal assessment or certification—making it an ideal option for individuals, teams, or communities seeking meaningful, time-efficient training.

Through the course, participants will:

MHFA Certification

MHFA Certification is an innovative and leading-edge program in the sector. Mental Health First Aid now offers official certification. The 2-day format of the MHFA Certification allows for robust, scenario-based training on the identification and support of declining mental health and crises, and provides a deeper understanding of mental health disorders and influences. Certification is valid for 3 years. This in-depth course, upon completion and assessment, provides participants:

MHFA FAQs

  • What is the difference between certified, certificate of participation, and Certification?

MHFA Certification is a formal recognition that participants have not only completed the course but also demonstrated their understanding through a knowledge assessment. This assessment ensures that participants have absorbed the key concepts and can apply the skills in real-life situations. Upon successful completion, individuals receive a certification that is valid for three years.

In contrast, a Certificate of Participation simply acknowledges that someone attended the course. It does not include any form of assessment and therefore does not validate whether the participant has retained or can apply the material.

MHFA Essentials offers similar content to the Certification course but in a more condensed format. While it does not include a formal assessment or certification, it is still built on best practices in adult education and mental health training. Participants gain practical skills and confidence, though the depth of learning and measurable change may be less than in the Certification course due to the shorter duration and lack of assessment.

In summary, Certification confirms both attendance and competence, while a Certificate of Participation confirms only attendance. Essentials provides foundational learning without formal recognition but remains a valuable training option.

  • Should I take MHFA Essentials or MHFA Certification?

It’s about choosing the right fit for your needs.

MHFA Essentials is a one-day, practical course designed to build general awareness and provide foundational mental health skills. It’s ideal for organizations looking to train large groups quickly and cost-effectively, without the need for formal assessment.

MHFA Certification, on the other hand, is a two-day course that goes deeper into the content, includes more scenario-based learning, and provides time for discussion and reflection. It also includes a formal knowledge assessment, and successful participants receive a nationally recognized certification valid for three years.

Both programs are built on the same MHFA framework and offer valuable learning experiences, but Certification adds a layer of validation and depth. Many workplaces choose to train most staff in Essentials while designating a few certified mental health first aiders per team or department to ensure a balanced approach.

  • How do I know which MHFA course, Essentials or Certification, is right for me or my team?

Choosing between MHFA Essentials and Certification depends on your team’s structure, work environment, and goals. Essentials is a one-day course that works well when you need broad coverage across a large group, offering practical skills and awareness without a formal assessment. Certification is a two-day course designed for those who will serve as designated mental health first aid responders or when your sector requires credentialed support. It includes deeper content, more scenario-based learning, and a formal assessment, resulting in a nationally recognized certification. Many organizations find a blended approach that is most effective in training the wider team in Essentials to build a culture of awareness, while strategically certifying key individuals to provide deeper support during a crisis.

  • Is MHFA Essentials better because it doesn’t expire?

While MHFA Essentials do not expire, it’s important to understand what that means in context. Essentials offers lasting foundational knowledge without a formal assessment or credentialing. Certification, on the other hand, is valid for three years and includes a knowledge assessment that confirms participants can apply what they’ve learned. The expiry encourages regular refreshers, helping individuals stay aligned with evolving best practices and research in mental health. Regardless of the course, we recommend revisiting training every few years to keep skills sharp and relevant.

  • If a participant takes MHFA Essentials, do they only need to take Day 2 of the Certification course to become certified?

No, participants must complete both days of the MHFA Certification course to receive certification. MHFA Essentials and MHFA Certification are separate courses and do not build on each other.

  • With MHFA Certification expiring after three years, does a person need to retake the full course or just redo the knowledge assessment?

Before their three-year certification expires, participants will need to complete a refresher to maintain their certification. This will not require retaking the full two-day course. We are currently finalizing the details of the refresher model, which will be similar to the approach used in physical first aid training.
