Local Workplaces Recognized for Supporting Health and Well-being of Employees During Second Year of the Pandemic

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Friday, October 29, 2021 | 9:00 a.m. | Windsor and Essex County

The annual Healthy Workplace Awards ceremony took place on Wednesday with local workplaces attending the virtual event. Business owners and not-for-profit organizations accepted their awards again during its 19-year history over a web-based conferencing system, due to the ongoing realities of COVID-19 public health protection measures and reopening strategies.

In previous years, organizers hosted the healthy workplace award breakfast to recognize local workplaces for implementing comprehensive workplace wellness activities and initiatives to promote positive lifestyle behaviours among their staff. As a result of COVID-19 and the exceptional efforts of local businesses to keep employees and the public safe, the Healthy Workplace Awards organizers continued their focus to acknowledge the challenges and opportunities associated with safe reopening and operations, while continuing to prioritize public health. Three key areas were highlighted in the awards application criteria for 2021, which included Health and Safety, Mental Health Promotion, and Organizational Social Responsibility during the pandemic. Applicants were required to provide examples of activities or measures that were put in place and evolving to support employee and community health, safety, and mental well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Organizers of the 2021 version of the revamped Healthy Workplace Awards program included all member agencies of the local Working Toward Wellness Committee; Committee members reviewed all applications thoroughly and were pleased to recognize 18 local workplaces with awards. Award recipients and other participating workplaces also enjoyed a keynote presentation from accomplished local athletics coach Kurt Downes.
